TV Globo has showed a report revealing problems with the aircraft that crashed and testimonies from former Voepass employees that raise questions about the airline's maintenance.
The crashed aircraft suffered a tail strike followed by hydraulic damage on March 11. The aircraft was ferried to Ribeirão Preto and underwent repairs, returning to commercial flights on July 9. The day before the crash, the aircraft had a problem with the air conditioning during a flight.
Former Voepass employees sent videos showing the poor condition of the airline's aircraft. The videos show loose/broken seats, damaged propeller blades, inoperative emergency light buttons, missing covers for the aircraft's electronic equipment, etc. They said that one aircraft was nicknamed by them as 'Maria of faith' because its condition was so deplorable they believed the aircraft only flew based on faith, because God wants it.
A former pilot said that on one of his flights, the aircraft had a problem with the deicing system. Voepass maintenance made an improvised repair using a matchstick and allowed the aircraft to resume operations.
Honestly, none of this surprises me. Those who travel frequently or have knowledge about airlines in Brazil know that Voepass has had a bad reputation for years, since the Passaredo years. It was even nicknamed 'Passamedo', which literally means 'To be afraid'. They even changed their name to Voepass in 2019 precisely to restore the company's reputation, giving the impression that it was a new airline and not the same old Passaredo as before.
After this report, Voepass' bankruptcy is practically certain. Their name has been dragged through the mud on national television and now their bad reputation is known nationwide, even by those who had never heard of them before or are not used to flying.
