https://www.politico.eu/article/europea ... mir-putin/STRASBOURG — The European Parliament has described Viktor Orbán’s visit to Russia as a “blatant violation of the EU’s Treaties and common foreign policy.”
In a vote Wednesday, members of the European Parliament condemned the meeting in passing a resolution that provided a commitment by the Parliament to maintain its support for Ukraine. Some 495 MEPs voted in favor of the pro-Ukraine resolution, with 137 voting against.

The declaration approved by the European Parliament “considers the visit to be a blatant violation of the EU’s Treaties and common foreign policy, including the principle of sincere cooperation,” while arguing that Orbán did not have the right to represent the EU while at the same time “violating common EU positions.”
https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/ ... or-ukraineParliament condemns Russia’s barbaric missile attack on the Okhmadyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, and the recent visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to the Russian Federation, which does not represent the EU and is a blatant violation of the EU’s treaties and common foreign policy. The text states that Hungary should face repercussions for these actions. Given the Hungarian Prime Minister’s so-called “peace mission” was immediately followed by the children’s hospital attack, the resolution also says this shows the “irrelevance” of Orbán’s alleged peace efforts.
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy ... 024-07-19/BUDAPEST, July 19 (Reuters) - Ukraine's decision to halt the transit of oil from Russia's Lukoil (LKOH.MM), opens new tab threatens the long-term security of supply for Slovakia and Hungary, Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told a news briefing on Friday.
Slovakia and Hungary said on Wednesday they had stopped receiving oil from Lukoil after Ukraine imposed a ban on the transit of oil from the company last month.
"We have been able to stabilise the situation with temporary solutions, but these will not be enough even for the near future," Szijjarto said.
https://www.politico.eu/article/hungary ... escalates/Following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU banned imports of Russian oil arriving at the bloc by sea, but allowed landlocked countries like Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to continue buying supplies via the Russia-to-Europe Druzhba pipeline until they could find an alternative solution.
But Budapest, which has angered Ukraine by holding up EU sanctions against Russia and has stalled Kyiv’s attempts to join the bloc, hasn't tried to find other options, said Isaac Levy, an analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air think tank.
“The reason that the EU gave Hungary an exemption was to allow them time to reduce their reliance on Russian oil through this pipeline,” he said. “But looking at the data since 2021, Hungary has increased its imports of Russian oil via this pipeline by over 50 percent.”
https://www.politico.eu/article/europea ... -slovakia/Szijjártó escalated his war of words on Tuesday, vowing Hungary will block funds used to reimburse EU countries for military aid sent to Ukraine in protest over Kyiv's sanctions.
"As long as this issue is not resolved by Ukraine, everyone should forget about the payment of the €6.5 billion of the European Peace Facility compensation for arms transfers," the Hungarian foreign minister vowed.
Budapest has already been blocking the reimbursements for over a year, offering ever-shifting reasons — a tactic the EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has branded as "shameful."
Hungary Seeks End to Lukoil Spat by September to Avert Fuel Risk
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... -fuel-riskHungary has until September to resolve a dispute with Ukraine over the transit of crude from a major Russian oil supplier before fuel shortages set in, according to the government minister in charge of the prime minister’s office.
Ukraine has sharpened sanctions against Lukoil PJSC over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, effectively prohibiting the company from using the war-torn country as a transit route for its product. That’s hit Hungary and Slovakia, landlocked nations that obtained exemptions from European Union energy sanctions on Russia.

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-polyti ... times.htmlThe UK has signaled it will work with Germany to build a weapon with a range of about 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers), diplomatic sources disclosed. Allies envisage the weapon being able to travel from as far as Berlin to Moscow in the event that Putin decides to launch tactical nuclear weapons.
John Healey, the defense secretary, is understood to have discussed the project with his German counterpart in Berlin on Wednesday, July 24. He was there as part of a 48-hour diplomatic tour around Europe to bolster cooperation between the UK and its allies and push his "NATO-first" defense strategy.

Privately, that’s the exasperated sentiment among EU diplomats as Hungary joins with Slovakia to try and leverage EU rules to preserve access to a discounted product nearly everyone else has had to shun: Russian oil.
Their maneuvering comes in the wake of Ukrainian sanctions blocking the transit of pipeline crude sold by Russia's largest private oil firm, Lukoil, which could strip the two countries of a third of their oil imports.
