The 1st Special Brigade totaled 8,942 men.

The Russian Expeditionary Force was a World War I military force sent to France by the Russian Empire. In 1915 the French requested that Russian troops be sent to fight alongside their own army on the Western Front. Initially, they asked for 300,000 men, an absurdly high figure, probably based on their assumptions about Russia’s “unlimited” reserves.
The French proposal wasn’t received with much enthusiasm by the Russian High Command, but Czar Nicholas II expressed his desire to send the troops to France.
The Chief of State, General Alexeyev, proposed a compromise saying that Russian soldiers would be sent under the following conditions: the soldiers would be sent in consolidated units to be overseen by Russian officers who would be working under the French High Command. These troops would be armed by the French and transported to the battle site by the French Navy.
The 1st Russian Special Brigade was formed in January 1916 under the command of General Nikolai Aleksandrovich Lokhvitsky. It did not consist of regiments already in existence but was made up mostly of drafts from various reserve units incorporated into the newly formed 1st and 2nd Regiments, from Moscow and Samara respectively.
The 1st Special Brigade totaled 8,942 men. It left Moscow on February 3, 1916, and arrived in Marseilles on April 16 of the same year. A Second Special Brigade was also sent to serve alongside other Allied formations on the Salonika Front in northern Greece.
After the October Revolution and subsequent withdrawal of Russia from the Allies, the Russian troops were looked upon with distrust and relegated to labor companies and internment camps, primarily at Camp Militaire, near La Courtine.
The Russian soldiers in 1st Brigade camp began questioning why they were fighting for the French at all and mutinied. The 3rd Brigade camp was still led by Russian officers (notably Colonel Gotua) and was used to help suppress the rebellious one.
Those Russians still committed to the defeat of Germany were reorganized into a French army unit known as the Russian Legion (Légion Russe des Volontaires) and sent back into action.
Placed into the line with a French Moroccan contingent, the Russians continued to fight fiercely. In fact, during the German Spring Offensive, the unit suffered 85 percent casualties.
The remnants of both the Moroccan and Russian outfits were integrated into a single unit that continued to serve until the end of the war. By the armistice, there were fewer than 500 Russians in the French army. After the war, with their Czar dead and communists running much of their homeland, many of these veterans stayed in France.

Vis-O-Matic - преди интернет и преди Amazon първия "online" магазин 50те

In the 1950s, visionary business entrepreneur Lawrence Freiman opened a new concept store that tried to reinvent the way people purchased things.
“Vis-O-Matic” was the Amazon Prime of its era: a store equipped with televisions where customers sat down, ordered products off the screen, and then headed home as the company shipped the purchases directly to them.
The Pembroke outpost in Ontario, Canada, reported the Globe and Mail, was “a small air-conditioned shop on the main street, fitted with booths and screens on which color pictures of merchandise articles are to be flashed.”
Customers sat down in front of one of eight booths fitted with 27-square-inch color televisions. The various product catalogs were stored similarly to microfilm in libraries and the staff changed the images being loaded on the screen depending on what the customer was looking for.
Built into each booth were three buttons: an “advance” button that toggled forward through the catalog, a “reverse” button that toggled back, and a knob that let customers jump past a large volume of slides. In all, 3,750 products were digitized and available for shipment to Pembroke.
When customers settled on a product, they wrote down their order on a notepad that, Women’s Wear Daily reported, was actually integrated into the booth armrests for easy access. Customers handed the paper to one of four “sales counselors” who used a teletype, a precursor to the fax, to send it back to Ottawa.
Then, at least per the official pitch from A.J. Freiman, “the goods are delivered the next day by mail or express”.
On June 14, only a week after the Pembroke Vis-O-Matic store opened, Freiman told a local journalist, “Our first experiences indicate there is no question but that we can sell anything by this method.”
Women’s clothing—especially dresses, sportswear and shoes—were the biggest seller on the Vis-O-Matic screens, with clothing for children following closely behind.
Yet, according to Freiman, “Business has also been done at the Pembroke store on such items as major appliances, radios, linoleum.”
Still, Freiman was well aware that his store wouldn’t be profitable in the short term. The cost of shipping individual orders the nearly 100 miles from Ottawa to Pembroke was far too massive to offset any profits unless customers throughout Canada were placing remote orders. He repeatedly clarified that the Pembroke store was an experiment, and “we shall continue to proceed cautiously.”
There do not appear to have been further reports on the Vis-O-Matic between 1951 and 1971, when A.J. Freiman was sold to retail giant Hudson’s Bay, and most consumer culture historians aren’t familiar with the innovation.

Редки кадри с пресушения Ниагарски водопад 1969:

For six months in the summer and fall of 1969, Niagara’s American Falls were “de-watered”, as the Army Corps of Engineers conducted a geological survey of the falls’ rock face, concerned that it was becoming destabilized by erosion. These stark images reveal North America’s iconic – and most powerful – waterfall to be almost as dry as a desert.
Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls.
The Horseshoe Falls lie mostly on the Canadian side and the American Falls entirely on the American side, separated by Goat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls by Luna Island.
To dewater the Niagara’s American Falls the army had to build a 600ft (182 m) dam across the Niagara River, which meant that 60,000 gallons of water that flowed every second was diverted over the larger Horseshoe Falls which flow entirely on the Canadian side of the border.
The dam itself consisted of 27,800 tons of rock, and on June 12, 1969, after flowing continuously for over 12,000 years, the American Falls stopped. The completed dewatering of the American Falls was made easier because only 10% of the water follows that route.
While the Horseshoe Falls absorbed the extra flow, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studied the riverbed and mechanically bolted and strengthened any faults they found; faults that would, if left untreated, have hastened the retreat of the American Falls. A plan to remove the huge mound of talus deposited in 1954 was abandoned because of the high cost.
For a portion of that period, while workers cleaned the former river-bottom of unwanted mosses and drilled test-cores in search of instabilities, a temporary walkway was installed a mere twenty feet from the edge of the dry falls, and tourists were able to explore this otherwise inaccessible and hostile landscape.
Finally, in November 1969 in front of 2,650 onlookers, the temporary dam was dynamited, restoring flow to the American Falls.
Even after these undertakings, Luna Island, the small piece of land between the main waterfall and the Bridal Veil, remained off-limits to the public for years owing to fears that it was unstable and could collapse into the gorge.
The falls—American Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and the small Bridal Veil Falls—formed some 12,000 years ago when water from Lake Erie carved a channel to Lake Ontario.
The name Niagara came from “Onguiaahra,” as the area was known in the language of the Iroquois people who settled there originally. After the French explorer, Samuel de Champlain described the falls in 1604, word of the magnificent sight spread through Europe.
A visit to Niagara Falls was practically a religious experience. “When I felt how near to my Creator I was standing,” Charles Dickens wrote in 1842, “the first effect, and the enduring one—instant lasting—of the tremendous spectacle, was Peace.”
Alexis de Tocqueville described a “profound and terrifying obscurity” on his visit in 1831, but he also recognized that the falls were not as invincible as they seemed. “Hasten,” Tocqueville urged a friend in a letter, or “your Niagara will have been spoiled for you.”
Today, erosion of the American Falls is estimated at 3 – 4 inches every 10 years (used to be on average 4 feet a year). The water flow which is regulated at a minimum level of 10% of the estimated 100,000 cubic feet per second during the summer (50,000 cubic feet per second during winter) is insufficient to cause major erosion.

Machining a Space Shuttle Main Engine injector, 1977

A workman reams holes to the proper size and alignment in the Space Shuttle Main Engine’s main injector body, through which propellants will pass through on their way into the engine’s combustion chamber.
Rockwell International’s Rocketdyne Division plant produced the engines under contract to the Marshall Space Flight Center. Not only does this image give us a glimpse into NASA’s past, but it also illustrates just how far machining technology has come over the past four decades.
Each of those injector nozzles is a separate piece; what we see in the picture is the whole assembly, with each of the nozzles poking through the “primary plate”. In all likelihood, the injectors are prefabricated with a slightly undersized hole, pressed into the plate and reamed out to final size in this setup.
Developed in the 1970s by the Marshall Space Flight Center, the Space Shuttle Main Engine was the world’s most sophisticated reusable rocket engine.
The space shuttle’s three main engines operated for 8 minutes and 40 seconds for each shuttle flight, with a combined output of 37 million horsepower. At their full power, that was equivalent to the output of 13 Hoover Dams.
After the solid rockets were jettisoned, the main engines provided thrust which accelerated the shuttle from 3,000 mph to more than 17,000 mph in just six minutes to reach orbit. T
hey created a combined maximum thrust of more than 1.2 million pounds. As the shuttle accelerated, the main engines burned a half-million gallons of liquid propellant provided by the external fuel tank.
Each main engine was 14 feet (14 m) long, weighed approximately 7,000 pounds (3.5 tons), and was 7.5 feet (2.4 m) in diameter at the end of its nozzle. It operated under temperatures ranging from −253 °C (−423 °F) to 3300 °C (6000 °F).
